We're Glad to Meet You!
About the Newman Center
Welcome new and prospective students to the
University of Tulsa and to the St. Philip Neri Newman Center!
The
Newman Center is the Catholic Student Center on the TU campus.
Our community is unlike any other on campus. Students at the
Newman Center meet others who want to grow spiritually and
socially in
a Catholic environment.
College-age
students from other area colleges, technical schools and
professional training centers
are also welcome to join our
community. What does the Newman Center have in store for you?
Read on and find out.
Helping
You Grow Socially and Spiritually
Social
Activities
What separates college life from the life of a monk? A completely different
social scene! We believe that social growth is an important aspect in the spiritual
growth of a Christian. Therefore we plan a variety of social activities every
week of the school year. Whether it is a Pizza night, a Karaoke fest, or a
Mardis Gras Dance, the Newman Center Peer Ministery Team works
hard to schedule events that provide relief from long hours of studying and
help introduce you to your peers.
Spiritual
Activities
The
St. Philip Neri Newman Center was founded to help students to grow in their faith
and understanding of the Roman Catholic Church. To fulfill this most important
need, the Newman Center provides several spiritual activities throughout the week.
Sunday
Mass is offered year-round at 8:00pm. During the school year,
smaller more student-oriented Masses are offered at 9:30pm Wednesday
nights and at 12:05pm Friday afternoons.
The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available on Sundays before Mass and by
appointment. Student-led rosaries are offered on Monday and Wednesday nights at 9:30pm.
Educational opportunities include the Catholic
Faith Series of courses, which explain the teachings of the Catholic
Church, and the Social Justice/Guatemala
Immersion
Program, a nationally recognized program that highlights the Church's
teaching on social justice.
If all of this wasn't enough, various other service
opportunities and spiritual events are organized by the Peer
Ministery Team.
If you have an idea for a spiritual activity you would like to do at the
Newman Center,tell
us about it!
A
Catholic Community with a Campus Impact
Many members of the Newman Center are as
close to one another as you might find in a fraternity
or sorority. Whatever their level of participation, Newman
Center students can experience the fellowship of a close-knit
student organization without a heavy commitment of time
or money.
An Impact on Campus
Newman Center students are actively involved in all aspects of
campus life, including TU’s Homecoming, service opportunities
such as Red Cross blood-drives, the American Cancer Society Relay
for Life, TU Ambassadors, New Student Orientation, fraternities
and sororities, and many other campus organizations.
An Impact in the Tulsa Community
More and more, Newman Center community service activities give
students a chance to be involved in the greater Tulsa community.
Projects include serving meals at the Day Center for the Homeless,
providing manpower for the Community Food Bank, working as mentors
at the Kendall-Whittier after school program or working with the
San Miguel School for at-risk kids.
Intramural Teams
The Newman Center participates (and often excels!) in many of the
intramural sports offered at the University of Tulsa. Each year,
Newman students participate in flag football, ultimate Frisbee,
basketball, volleyball and other sports.
Giving
Back to the Tulsa Catholic Community
We
Have Much to be Thankful For
The Newman Center would not be successful without generous support from the Diocese
of Tulsa and the surrounding Catholic community and foundations. In an effort
to show our gratitude, our retreat programs give us a way to give something back
to our many supporters.
Confirmation
Retreat
Each school year, the Newman Center offers
Confirmation Retreats for area high school students preparing
for the Sacrament of Confirmation. One of the largest such
programs in the State of Oklahoma, over 100 confirmands
participate each year.
Exalt
and Rejoice in the Spirit (ERiS) Youth Rally
Each spring, local college students work together
to present a youth rally for area junior high school students.
The ERiS rally is a daylong retreat for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.
It seeks to expose students to a different and lively experience
of their faith.

Catholic
Faith Series
The Catholic Faith Series is a nationally recognized educational
program offered by the Newman Center. The content
of the series operates on a new three-year curriculum.
Year 1: Foundations of Faith (2006-2007)
Year 2: Sacraments and the Moral Life (2007-2008)
Year 3: Catholic Spirituality (2008-2009)
Meeting on Tuesday nights throughout the academic
year, students have an opportunity to deepen
their understanding of their Christian faith
and seek a deeper spiritual understanding. Students
participating in this program earn scholarship
credits toward each year's immersion experience
in May.
The immersion experience for 2006-2007 will be
a Pilgrimage to Rome.
Social Justice/Guatemala Immersion Program
During the spring semester, interested students gather to study
the Church's teaching on social justice. Meeting for six weeks
beginning in January, they prepare themselves for a service immersion
experience to Central America over Spring Break.
Participants in the classes earn scholarship credit to cover a portion
of the trip expenses. In March, during Spring Break, students and staff
will be traveling to the Lake Atitlán region in western
Guatemala. For more information, contact the Newman Center or click
here.
